Eve Arden, who starred in dozens of films as the heroine's sarcastic and wise best friend, warm-hearted but mean school teacher or secretary, died yesterday at her home in Beverly Hills, California. The actress said she was born on April 30, 1912, but family spokesman Ron Liesel said she was 83 years old. Liesel said the cause of death was a heart attack. She made her Broadway debut in 1934 in the Ziegfeld Follies.  Arden was primarily a Hollywood actress, although she regularly attended plays and outings in New York. In the radio and television series Or Miss Brooks, which ran from 1948 to 1957, she was best known as the ironically passionate English teacher.
